A constellation of structures including a museum, weaving ateliers, museum shop and cafeteria around a central patio and garden celebrate the legacy of the award-winning Mexican weaver Martina García Cruz. Designed to assimilate visually with the rural environs of the hamlet of El Mejay, the museum showcases Otomi handcrafts and encourages preservation of its unique language and folk knowledge. The Otomi are a distinct ethnic group in Mexico renowned for fine weaving using the traditional loom. Relying exclusively on oral tradition, Otomi textile designs achieve extremely precise stitching and intricate patterns without the use of drawings or measurements. Echoing this approach, Slot realized that every brick in this unique landmark might act as a single stitch in the fabric of the building.
